How to Choose Handmade Wooden Furniture: Beds, Chairs and Sofas That Last

Good handmade wooden furniture is an investment: a well-built bed or armchair can last for generations and often looks better with age. But not all “wooden” furniture is the same. This guide explains what to look for so you choose pieces that are comfortable, beautiful and built to last.

1. Start with solid wood

Solid hardwood is stronger and longer-lasting than chipboard or MDF covered with veneer. In Pakistan, sheesham (Indian rosewood) is prized for its strength, rich grain and resistance to wear; walnut, oak and ash are also popular. Ask what the frame, legs and rails are made of — not just the visible surfaces.

2. Check the joints and carving

  • Joints: mortise-and-tenon or dowelled joints are far stronger than furniture held together only with screws and glue.
  • Carving: hand carving has crisp, deep detail with tiny natural variations; machine-pressed “carving” looks shallow and identical.
  • Finish: a smooth, even polish without drips protects the wood and brings out the grain.

3. Choosing a bed

Measure your room and mattress first. A solid wood bed with a panel or slatted headboard suits modern rooms, while a carved tufted bed or four-poster bed becomes the centrepiece of a traditional bedroom. Strong side rails and a central support leg are essential for queen and king sizes. Matching side tables and dressers make a complete bedroom set.

4. Choosing chairs and sofas

Sit before you buy, or ask for seat height and depth. For armchairs, a seat height of about 42–45 cm and a supportive back are comfortable for most people. A wingback armchair is perfect for reading corners; hand-carved armchairs in pairs work well in living rooms and reception areas. For sofas, check that cushions use high-density foam and that the fabric is suited to daily use — velvet, damask and cotton blends are all available to order.

5. Made to order: sizes, woods and fabrics

One advantage of buying directly from the workshop is that most pieces can be adjusted — a bed made to a custom mattress size, a sofa in your own fabric, or a darker or lighter polish to match existing furniture. Share a photo of your room and the sizes you need.

6. Caring for wooden furniture

  1. Dust with a soft dry cloth; avoid harsh sprays.
  2. Keep pieces out of strong direct sunlight and away from heaters to prevent cracking.
  3. Polish or wax two or three times a year.
  4. Use coasters and mats to protect the finish.
